Before the time of chain saws and Ice Augers, ice saws took the raw power of man's muscle of arm and back to gain entrance to the ice underworld to reach the rich bounties for those who dare tread there. (Dramatic Huh)

Ice Saws were the original old time tool for ice and spear fishers to gains access to the waters below the ice.

First a hole had to be chipped or drilled, then the saw could be used to widen the hole to be able to fish with a spear. The rods were hand forged metal and attached to a blade and handle.

Other than spear fishing - these saws cut ice for home icebox. The chunks would be cut to large cubes and then buried in a sawdust house and then dug out when needed. A few may still remember the Icebox before the refrigerator where there would be a special compartment to hold the ice and cool the inners of the icebox, so the name ICEBOX.
